Especially when the stories were about real life black Americans. Such as the first African American to become a Supreme Court Judge or the first African American to play in Major League Baseball. But it was his performance as a fictional African king that cemented him in the global psyche. Black Panther became a cultural touchstone and carried with it incredibly deep significance for generations of people crushed under the knee of centuries of physical and mental oppression. On the day of the 55th anniversary of the death of Emmet Till, Chadwick Boseman passed away from stage 3 colon cancer. First discovered in 2016, he had suffered for 4 years.
And then He died.
As the Black Panther, he portrayed an almost invincible character with remarkable strength and speed. But when Hollywood collides with real life, a million little pieces of shrapnel explode into the atmosphere. Shards of mourning and lamentations pierce almost every heart. He that seemed immortal, now was suddenly…cut down. They walked with him, they loved him, they hung on every word he said, every thing he did was truly like an action movie. Jesus was immortal to so many. To the point where even though He told them He would soon die they refused to believe. And then He died.
He who seemed all-powerful fell to humanity’s most resilient pandemic…death. While Jesus prophesied His passing, in the same breath He told of His resurrection. Two nights of mourning became a day of the most unbelievable miracle. The Prince of the Universe was awakened by His Eternal Father. An empty tomb marks the place where Divinity slept. So while we are reminded how very fragile we are and we mourn a fictional king. May we be also reminded that another King, who so many treat as fictional, lives and reigns right now where death nor time exist. And here’s the plot twist…He wants you to be with Him. Your choices today and tomorrow will determine that new and ultimate reality. Yahweh, forever.
